SNAP Benefits Paused Starting Nov. 1 — Here's What You Need to Know

Grocery cart full of food

As the federal government shutdown continues, many South Dakota families are facing a new challenge. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has instructed states to pause all new SNAP payments beginning November 1.

This means that unless the shutdown is resolved soon, people who rely on SNAP for groceries will not receive their benefits as expected next month.

If this affects you, we want you to know:

You are not alone. And you are always welcome at the Faith Temple Food Giveaway.

What’s happening with snap benefits?

SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides food assistance to over 80,000 people in South Dakota. With the shutdown still ongoing, state agencies are unable to distribute new SNAP funds without federal approval.

We know this creates a stressful and uncertain situation for many, especially for those already stretching each dollar to cover rent, fuel, student loans, and groceries. Some people have told us this is their first time facing food insecurity. Others are simply tired of one more thing going wrong.

Wherever you are on that spectrum, we are here for you.

Plan and Be Patient

If you currently receive SNAP, we encourage you to:

  • Use your October benefits carefully

  • Plan simple meals with shelf-stable pantry staples

  • Visit local food resources early; they will run out of resources

  • Connect with others in your circle for shared meals or support

  • Be patient with food pantries and service organizations as they prepare for higher demand

This is a hard moment, but it is not a forever moment. You are part of a community that cares about you.

Many people have asked how they can support during this time. Here are three meaningful ways:

Volunteer — Join us at 3:15 PM on Fridays to help serve

Donate — Your gift helps us meet rising food costs https://www.faithtemplefood.com/donate

Share — Tell friends and neighbors that help is available

We believe in meeting needs without judgment. Whether this is your first time needing help or just one more rough patch in a challenging year, we are here. We serve because we’ve received much, and we want to bless others with the same kind of love and care we’ve been shown through Jesus.

We are praying for a resolution, and we will keep showing up until it comes.
